Heroes, villains, damsels in distress – these archetypes, or some variation of them, have existed in every form of storytelling throughout history. But no medium has captured the drama, fantasy or excitement of these characters quite the way comic books have. It’s easy to see why comic books hold so much appeal. The vibrant, colorful frames seem to move like a film reel as you read them, containing images of characters beyond possibility living in worlds too fantastical to believe and fighting in the timeless war of good versus evil. The comic book world has given us pop-culture hero icons such as Batman, Superman, the X-Men … Archie. And except for Archie these heroes all have some unique or special power that gives them the leg-up in the battle against evil. For Batman, or Bruce Wayne, that power seems to be money and prestige (and a great home gym), Superman is an alien with super-human powers and the X-Men are a rag-tag group of benevolent mutants with powers ranging from weather control to telepathy to … whatever Cypher does. One of the most popular and intriguing characters in the world of comic book fandom is Spider-Man. Spider-Man is the gravity-defying, full body suit-wearing Peter Parker, who due to an unfortunate run-in with a radioactive spider was given superhuman abilities or “spider-sense”. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Spider-Man for Marvel Comics in 1962 and since then he has been one of the more relatable comic book characters especially for young readers. “Spider-Man originally was in high school and was kind of an outcast then he gets these powers and he couldn’t really tell what was going on, kind of like teen angst,” says Bob Gordon, owner of Acme Comics. “He was a real underdog.” Spider-Man and the litany of other superheroes contained in comic books are imaginative and charismatic characters who have inspired children and adults alike for decades. In fact, the first recognized comic book was written by Rudolph Topffer in Switzerland and was published in 1837. The book was also the first comic book to be published in the United States where it was released in 1842. Though the book qualifies more as a graphic novel it does provide an early example of the multi-paneled comic book template. It wasn’t until 1938 with the publication of the very first Superman that comic books started to become a real industry. Now, with so many comic book-based films flooding the multiplexes, comic books and comic book characters are seeing a revival of public interest. Gordon has seen an increased interest in comic books that seems to coincide with the release of a comic book-themed film and he says a majority of that interest surprisingly doesn’t come from children. “It’s usually adults who have just seen one of the movies, sometimes they used to read comics and they’re getting back into it. But the films have been good for the comic book industry.” The three Spider-Man films grossed nearly $2.5 billion worldwide and the Spider-Man comic book and all of its spinoff series are maintaining a thriving readership. In fact, early versions of the Spider-Man series are considered collector’s items. Amazing Fantasy #15, the comic book that first introduced the Spider-Man character, is worth around $70,000. Comic books continue to shock, delight and surprise their audience. Their popularity and influence seems to grow more apparent in society and many are even recognized for their outstanding literary achievement. It was The Serpent Son’s first Peoria show since June 2007 and along with the other bands on the ticket, Devil’s Pie, Scout’s Honor and The Forecast, they packed an impressive crowd into the small venue. The Meeting House is really just another name for the basement of the Church of the Brethren on Sheridan. Though it got its start in the nineties, the Meeting House’s most recent incarnation is due to organizer Cathy Gilbert, 25, who wanted to create an all-ages music venue in the area. She crafted a proposal to create the venue in the Church and submitted it to the Church staff. “I was clear that these bands would play secular music but that has never been an issue. The main goal is to offer a safe space for people of all ages to listen to the music they like.” Cathy is also an English Instructor for Heartland Community College. “I’m basically a nerd who runs rock shows.” The Meeting House hosts mostly metal bands and because they are all ages shows the bands get to reach out to younger age groups they would have missed just playing bar gigs. Skyler, 16, Amanda, 16, Ryan, 16, Corinn, 16, and Luke, 17, all arrived early to see The Forecast play. “We’ve been counting down for this show for a while,” says Skyler. The Forecast was the least metal band on the ticket but was certainly the crowd favorite. Their music is classified as hardcore or as Skylar put it, “Metal-ish.” But metal is not so strict a genre anymore. Metal now has a whole series of sub-genres, such as new rock or indie metal, that keep it current, and keep it alive, as the music scene changes. The show started at 6:30 pm and another band joined the ticket, Wholehearted. This band is from Wisconsin and they did a fifteen minute set. The crowd was getting larger but looked like a bunch of nervous teenagers with cool hair just standing around. Not very metal. The second band, Devil’s Pie, came on the stage and started to play. One minute into their first song and the crowd exploded. A small clearing formed in the center of the room so those who wished to simply observe the band could be safely outside the circle of those who wished to mosh to the band. If you are unfamiliar with moshing, it is a style of dance in which a person throws himself in a violent, thrashing manner against a group of likewise thrashing people. Some people were crowd surfing which lead to many being dead dropped from almost seven feet up. The energy in the Meeting House was at a feverish high. He pictured a comfortable, stylish space where he could work and play and where others, both clients and employees, could relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Now after nearly three years in the making, that vision has finally become a reality. Slape purchased the Biggins print building in 2008 to house the Numero Magazine offices as well as a studio for his photography business. Located in the warehouse district of downtown Peoria, the front section of the Biggins print building was built in 1872 and began as a federal storage facility where barrels of Hiram Walker whiskey were stored. The back section of the building was added later. Eventually the Biggins label print company purchased the building and it served as their office for many years. Over time, the building experienced a great deal of wear and tear as well as poor design decisions that left it in disrepair. Slape purchased the building in 2008 and has been busy fixing it up ever since. One of his first projects was to renovate his office so with the help of family, friends and local design and renovation businesses, he started the process of turning the office into a chic, inspirational space that stays true to the building’s industrial look. “A lot of people are going for the warehouse look but I wanted to reveal the beauty of the building,” says Slape. “It doesn’t make sense to buy an old building and not try to restore its character. I wanted to salvage and maintain as much of that original character as possible.” Transforming the space proved to be a daunting task. Even with the help of his makeshift crew Slape put in countless hours to make his vision a reality. Luckily the building retains many of its original features, which gave Slape something to work with. A drop ceiling and fluorescent lighting was removed to expose the room’s original high ceiling, which still has its tin tiling. Slape chose to paint the tin tiles black to accentuate their charm and to cleverly camouflage any damage they incurred over time. The office’s old carpeting was pulled up and the underlying wood floor was sanded and stained by Slape’s friend Chip Fauber. “We custom colored the floor,” says Slape. “There were inches of paint and resin stuck to the floor but we were able to remove it.” The hard work shows. The floors now have a rich, amber tone that creates a feeling of warmth in the room. The office shares an outer wall and the exposed brick was hidden by wood paneling and covered with years of dirt and paint. Slape spent hours sandblasting and sealing the brick to reveal its true character. The effect of the exposed brick wall is very striking and gives the room a very urban-chic vibe. The remaining three walls in the office required new dry wall, which Slape was able to do himself. The room has one large window that had been sealed shut for many years. The glass panes were falling apart and the metal frame was in such disrepair it required the help of an auto body shop to repair it. Local artist Hiram Toraason helped Slape coordinate this project and also contributed the gorgeous hand-made glass chandeliers that are featured in the space. When he first started planning, Slape called on designers Lisa Stovall and Ric (Nicole I need his last name) at Bella Grove to help him configure how the office would be set up and to help him flush out his design vision. They worked with him to find the best possible arrangement for his desk, sitting area and storage to maximize the space. “We wanted to maintain the overall industrial warehouse feel of the space while trying to reflect Dennis’ personal style,” says Stovall. “ ‘Found objects’, city culture … definitely unique and maybe even a bit quirky. We were there as consultants to help edit his ideas.” With their recommendations in mind, Slape built custom cabinetry and a desk/work area to create more storage and designed a large bookshelf unit for the back wall, which was built by A. Lucas & Sons. His custom cabinetry was then topped with black granite countertops installed by DesignPlus. With the bones of the room finally in place, Slape was able to start installing furniture, equipment and other unique items to personalize the space. Slape is a self-professed salvager and thus he was able to furnish his office with one-of-a-kind finds he could update or renew himself. One particularly eye-catching piece is the 1940’s medical narcotics cabinet he has repurposed into a mini bar. Slape spent a lot of time online hunting for a narcotics cabinet and was able to purchase one in less than perfect condition for a deal. He completely refurbished it and now it serves as a sleek drink station with a sink and a working refrigeration cabinet. The sitting area of the office features a salvaged, black leather couch given to Slape by friends who planned to throw it away. With a little TLC, he has given the couch new life and it fits perfectly with the rest of the room. The sitting area also features a large HD television where he can show clients his work from his desk. It was a labor of love but Slape’s office is now an industrial oasis filled with creative energy that inspires and excites. And though the room was created as a workspace, Slape wants it to be a place where he, his clients and his staff can relax and hang out. “Most people are trying to create a home office. Other than writing blogs and creating your own online videos, podcasts are one of the best ways to disseminate your opinion or general information and we’re going to show you what you need to know to create your own unique podcast. So why is podcasting so appealing? Podcasts provide listeners with a way to connect with people from around the world and hear their various opinions whether those opinions deal with sports or music or politics. As opposed to standard radio programming, there are a vast number of podcasts covering an endless array of topics that can appeal to almost any listener. Also podcasts are generally immune from the same censorship standards associated with most publicly recorded content. While this can be both good and bad, there is certainly a podcast for nearly any taste. Creating a podcast can seem intimidating if you don’t consider yourself particularly computer-savvy but podcasting is not as complicated as you might imagine. There are a myriad of tools available to you online to create a podcast that sounds as professional as those of the more advanced podcasters on the internet. But to sound as professional as possible you should solidify the topic or general area of interest you want to discuss. Some podcasters focus on particular subject while others feel more comfortable within a free-form style of broadcasting. Next it’s important you create a schedule to follow for creating your podcasts. The more consistently you stick to your schedule the more your listeners can rely on your posts. Create a method for posting your podcasts such as a blog that provides a reliable source for your audience. Blogger or Wordpress are both great blog sites that allow you to create your own blogs for free. To record your podcast you can use the software available on your computer or take advantage of free sites on the internet. Obviously it’s important to make sure you have a microphone to hook up to your computer if your computer doesn’t have a built in recording device. Also you should make sure your computer has adequate memory available to save your recordings. If you are a Mac user, Garage Band allows you to record your podcast in a way that sounds nearly as professional as the more advanced recordings available on the internet. Otherwise you can use sites such as Blogtalkradio or PodBean, which are user-friendly and offer easy ways for you to publish your podcasts to your blog or to social networking sites such as Myspace or Facebook. If you are serious about podcasting there are also pay sites available to record and organize your podcasts for online distribution such as PodOmatic which also offers online memory for storing your recordings. Creating your own podcast can be a rewarding and highly enjoyable experience if you find the right topic, choose the right programs to record and find the best method for posting your finished product. Luckily for two international Bradley students, the Peoria area provides just the place to plant the seeds to grow their businesses. Every year Bradley University hosts a contest called Project Springboard in which students enter a business plan and the winning plan is rewarded with marketing assistance, office space and some starting capital. It was due to this program that Adesegun Sun-Basorun or Sunbash and Tatenda Furusa, the 2008 and 2009 winners respectively, were able to get their business ideas off the ground. Tatenda is a senior international business major at Bradley University. He is originally from Zimbabwe but he chose to come to the U.S. for the education and to have “the American college experience.” He was considering a number of possible institutions but after speaking with his uncle who is an alum of Bradley University he decided to come to Peoria. “Bradley was on my short list of colleges I was thinking about attending, even before my uncle recommended it to me but his recommendation helped me make the decision to come here.” Sunbash graduated from Bradley last year but he came to the university from southwest Nigeria and was drawn to the school because he was impressed with the strength of their engineering program and the Peoria area reminded him of his hometown. “Peoria seemed to have a slower lifestyle, it is a smaller city, I felt like I wouldn’t get as lost in the crowd.” Sunbash won the Project Springboard contest in 2008 with his business plan for an interactive guest book called Memwas. Memwas is still a developing project but the basic concept is a system that allows people who are hosting a special event such as a wedding or an anniversary party to record thoughts and messages from their guests that can be saved digitally and enjoyed on a DVD. This concept makes perfect sense in a world that is becoming increasingly digitized but Sunbash is facing increasing competition in the market of interactive guest books. “When I started this idea there were maybe five other companies that offered this service, now there are more than ten.” In order to stay competitive in this developing industry, Sunbash decided to partner with other businesses within the industry that provide similar services in hopes of creating hardware, software and web-based options for Memwas. In the midst of growing his first business, Sunbash is also working with Tatenda on his winning business idea: a website called Matchio that facilitates the sale or trade of used college textbooks within the Bradley University community. Both Sunbash and Tatenda realized that one of the biggest gripes of college students is the great expense and minimal return associated with college textbooks. In their research they found facebook groups created by students who were trying to bypass the bookstore by creating their own buy and trade networks. The two perceived the need for an organized facilitator for these transactions and Matchio was born. Unlike other websites that cater to students looking for textbooks, Matchio matches students with a need for a book to students who are trying to sell a book and then they meet in person on campus rather than process the order online. “It allows people to exchange and buy goods within a close, secure environment,” says Tatenda, “this way, the seller gets their money faster and the buyer gets their book faster.” The two entrepreneurs hope to expand the Matchio brand to other universities and eventually corporate environments with goods that go beyond just books. So what is it about the Peoria area that helps entrepreneurs like Sunbash and Tatenda grow their business? Tatenda thinks the close associations you can create here make it possible for small business and entrepreneurs to succeed. “This is a very close-knit community so you can hone in and find 1 or 2 or 3 mentors who like you and your idea and where you’re going compared to a bigger city where it’s harder to find someone to believe in you or invest in you.” People here take an active role and there is an emotional aspect to their involvement,” adds Sunbash. “So when he says ‘invest’ it’s more than investing financially into the business it’s about investing their time and their mentorship to help grow you.” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56186502e4b0dfaa03476351/1452147187594-ODJAXH482B2A2GZO5ZYQ/image-asset.jpeg Writing - And All That Jazz For those of you, like me, who aren’t completely boned up on your jazz history, you may be wondering how the theme this month relates to an article about jazz. “Bird” is Charlie Parker’s nickname, a famous saxophonist whose influence helped shape the landscape of jazz and blues in American culture. He played during the hey-day of jazz along with other famous musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk. In Parker’s time, jazz, and all of its incarnations, was pop music. But now, jazz is a dying art and that trend is all the more apparent in Peoria’s local music scene. Not only is a limping economy barely pulling in well-paid gigs but a flagging interest in the musical genre keeps the demand low for jazz musicians. “There’s only a handful of slots people are vying for,” says Paul Weddle, local jazz artist and saxophonist for the band Change Up, “and most places don’t want to pay what it costs for quality musicians. If it’s quality, you don’t cut the cost on quality.” Weddle is a career musician who’s been playing music for 40 years. Trained from an early age, he played clubs in Philadelphia where he learned the value of understanding your audience. “You need to bring the public along for the ride; there are so few people who can be considered jazz aficionados so you’ve got to know your audience. Sometimes I ask them what their favorite song is and we learn it. It’s like custom cooking.” Dexter O’Neal, the vocalist for Change Up, is another career musician working in the Peoria area. “In Peoria, there are great opportunities to grow as a musician. I’ve played in the Toronto music scene and the talent is definitely comparable to Peoria.” But O’Neal has also noticed a decline in demand for jazz music in the area. “The clubs have tightened up a bit and there are a few less venues. But we need to stay innovative, spontaneous and improvisational. I think jazz is due for an upgrade. Right now, jazz is for the listener, it needs to go back to being dance music.” I had the opportunity to see Change Up play and they are definitely one of the hottest jazz groups in the area. It’s hard to imagine how live jazz could possibly suffer venues. The music is so, well, cool. The guys in Change Up can take any song, whether it’s a jazz standard or not, and rework it in a way that sounds completely new. And this is what makes jazz great, it’s never the same. It’s a constantly evolving and growing art form. But why isn’t there a demand for it? I looked around the venue they were playing and I couldn’t help but notice the low attendance. Two college-aged girls stumbled in at one point and did a bizarre, spastic dance while the group played, almost mocking the seemingly random style that characterizes jazz for most people. I was embarrassed, but not for the band. Jazz isn’t in high demand because it’s not understood. So much of music today is synthesized, spoon-fed drivel we don’t know how to appreciate real music or musicians anymore. And in these difficult economic times it can be hard to justify a night on the town, sitting in a club listening to music. But patronage is the lifeblood of the arts. With all the incredible talent in our area we owe it to our local artists and musicians to make sure they have incentive to stay in Peoria. Pawn shops existed as far back as ancient Greece and since that time, have proven to be almost completely recession-proof. These stores offer quick cash to those looking to sell, and low prices for those looking to buy. Don Bell, owner of East Peoria Jewelry and Trade, has owned his shop for a little over a year and has seen a significant increase in business since the economy took a turn for the worst. More people than ever are looking to sell or trying to find items to buy for a deal. “I wish I could buy everything but I turn away 50 percent of what come in the door,” says Bell. The large influx of sellers has allowed Bell to be more selective with what he chooses to buy and resell in his store. “I need to set myself apart from Goodwill, Salvation Army or a flea market. I’m looking for high-quality, name-brand items in good condition, not scratched up.” says Bell. “I’m being really picky about what I’m buying and I know other shops are doing the same thing.” East Peoria Jewelry and Trade carries typical merchandise such as flat screen televisions, laptop computers and musical instruments, but the store also offers many unique items that are difficult to find anywhere else. “I am one of the only shops in the area that offers hundreds of Nintendo game cartridges and the original Nintendo system, vintage stereo equipment and CB’s and ham radios,” says Bell. Offering unique and hard to find items has helped set Bell’s shop apart and bring in business from outside the area. “I have people coming from as far away as St. Louis for CB equipment. I have one customer who comes in every weekend from Galesburg.” Before he made the decision to open his own store, Bell was a regular shopper in other area pawn shops. His time in these shops gave him the necessary background he needed to decide the kinds of merchandise he wanted to offer. When he noticed the economy was starting to go downhill, he talked with his family and they thought it was the right time to open their store. Although he is profiting from a failing economy, he is sympathetic to the difficulties around him. “Times are tight,” he says. “People are trying to pay mortgages and bills. I had one woman come in to sell some of her stuff because she needed to buy medicine for her sick daughter. I have kids, too, so I can relate to what she’s going through.” Bell gets to help people in his business but he often wishes he could do more. “If I won the lottery I would try to help as many people as possible. I love Al Gore for inventing the internet. It is the nexus of almost everything I enjoy and I use it constantly. It’s my shopping mall, my bank, a source of entertainment, and it provides up-to-the-minute coverage of my friends’ lives (thank you, facebook.) I trust the internet and believe in its usefulness but there is one cyber-territory into which I never dared to tread: online dating. I always thought using the internet to meet someone was, for lack of a better term, icky. But online dating has come a long way since the days of seedy chat rooms (though those are still around if that’s what you’re into.) Now, thanks to sites like Match.com, Chemistry.com and Fulloffish.com, people are connecting with each other more than ever. Just as video killed the radio star, the internet has killed traditional dating. Each month, more than 20 million people visit at least one online dating website and many sites boast hundreds of thousands of successful matches. Because online dating has been around almost as long as the internet itself, these sites have grown in sophistication and are able to offer their users more unique features. The pay sites (websites you must pay to use such as EHarmony.com, Chemistry.com, and Match.com) tend to bring the most success for users looking for long-term commitment because they are more selective and they help do some of the work of finding someone for you. You enter your information and fill out questions regarding your preferences in another person and the site will generate matches for you. The process of generating matches varies depending on the site but most pay sites employ a method that considers not only your preferences but your profile, as well. Eharmony.com, for example, pre-screens your potential matches across 29 dimensions such as character and values to see if they correspond to your personality profile and you to theirs. Pay sites tend to be more selective about who joins their network which weeds out those who aren’t as serious about meeting someone and those who might just be, well…a little off. They also provide increased security, more advanced software and less pop-up and banner advertising. If you are interested in meeting someone online but don’t think you should have to pay to do it there are sites out there for you, as well. Plentyoffish.com, OKCupid.com and Downtoearth.com (which, incidentally, is owned by the same company that owns Match.com and Chemistry.com) are all very successful, non-pay websites. The best part about these sites is they are 100% free to use and they offer many of the same benefits as the pay sites: you create a profile, specify your preferences and the site generates suggested matches. Because these sites are free there is a wider selection of people using them which means a wider selection of interests, backgrounds and levels of commitment. The non-pay website is great for someone just looking for a date, friendship or someone who’s preferences tend to err more on the (ahem) unique side. This is not to say you can’t find long-term commitment on these sites but the people looking for long-term commitment and those looking for every other variation of dating are all swimming in the same pool. You may end up in murky water. The free sites also allow more advertising and provide less security measures, but as I mentioned before, they don’t cost you anything. The pool of people gets even bigger, and in many cases, murkier, when you look at online personal ads. Sites such as Yahoopersonals.com and Craigslist.com require the least commitment from their users and offer the least security of the aforementioned sites. Everything and anything is possible in the personals. Looking to meet an ex-ninja with four kids and a penchant for collecting stickers? Here’s Dan from Ohio! If you are using the internet for casual dating, online personal ads are a good way to go. The sites are free, relatively discreet and you don’t have to provide as much information about yourself. If you do decide to include more information about yourself, be smart about what you post publicly and provide to other users. After visiting a variety of different dating websites I started to wonder, what’s the appeal? Why use or even pay for, something that helps you do what people have been doing for thousands of years: meeting other people? The answer is simple: efficiency. The advancement of technology, intending to simplify our lives, has made us feel less pain, experience more pleasure and made us extremely aware of the value of time. Time is a precious commodity and the faster we can get things done the sooner we can start enjoying life. You vow to lose weight, quit smoking, start eating better and more often than not, setting these lofty goals makes them seem impossible to conquer.
